Ministry of Commerce revealed the production of sugar to Indonesia at the beginning of next year will not meet the needs of people in the country. To that end, the government plans to import white sugar crystals from overseas manufacturers.
“Here we are still calculating how much exactly,” said Vice Minister of Commerce Krisnamurthi in Jakarta, Friday, November 25, 2011.
Ministry of Trade data show, the production of white sugar until the end of 2011 reached 2.3 million tons to 2.4 million tonnes. Meanwhile, public demand for sugar reaches 2.7 million to 2.8 million tonnes per year. “We are still short of 300 thousand to 500 thousand tons,” he said.
However, Bayu asserted that the government was still calculating the exact number and supply needs of sugar until the end of 2011. In addition, being contemplated as well, the government’s efforts to meet the shortage of sugar supply.
Among the several steps needs sugar, Bayu admit import option has become one of the alternative government to reduce the supply shortfall.
However, the government asserts, the new import options will be chosen if there is certainty that the action would not affect the sugar milling season.
“That (import) is not a simple thing, but hopefully in the near future is already decided,” he said.
Bayu also said the government is planning to import 1.6 million tonnes of rice to meet the national rice stock. The request came from one of Bulog proposals are concerned with the impact of flooding Thailand.
“Up to this time there is a new application from India and Thailand Bulog about it,” he said.
In the previous government coordination meeting, planned rice imports by 1.5 million tonnes of rice to 2 million tons of rice. “But it’s taken 1.6 million tons. (But) it’s still within range of an existing discussion,” said Bayu.
Bayu said, before the harvest next year, the government will use regulation and the predominance of existing ones. “We wait rakornya hopefully next week already talk of food coordination meetings and we can decide together,” he said.
